A Green
Frog - a
children's tale "what
are you doing here?" Lionel can't believe his eyes. This
morning, when he opened the shutters, he heard a funny sound, so he
stepped out and what did he find but a lovely green frog, squatting in
the grass.
The terrasse is so small;
Daddy made it, up
there on the sixth floor; there's a rose tree, two geraniums in their
pots, a lemon tree and a tiny pool in the middle of a diminutive lawn.
Everybody likes it, and the visitors are numerous: insects, flies,
mosquitoes, a few bees buzzing about, lizards that climb up the chimney
stack at full speed...
But who could have imagined that a frog... This is the very first time
that it happens in Lionel's little realm!
How did he manage
to get up here? On
the way to school, Lionel was thoughtful: should he tell his friends
about it? He is not sure.
Earlier on, when he had tried to get closer, Lionel had
noticed that he was very shy; he leapt away and started to tremble so
hard that his throat could be seen to be beating wildly.
Lionel is fond of his teacher, Mr. Bumblebee, and he usually pays
attention to the lesson, but today he just cannot concentrate. The only
thing he has in mind is his new friend. What is he doing now? Is
he hungry?
Lionel raises a finger "Please, Sir..."
Mr. Bumblebee has just finished explaining how to add up and thinking
his pupil has completed his task and is ready to give the answer he
smiles at him broadly
"Yes Lionel?"
"Sir,
what do frogs eat?"
The other children raise their heads:
everybody's interested in frogs. The teacher is so surprised he does not
even scold Lionel. Besides, frogs are an important topic; he asks the
whole class:
"what do you think?"
They all
come up with a suggestion: seeds, bread, cheese crumbs, flies, worms,
sugar, chocolate... Mr. Bumblebee bursts out in laughter:
"just try golden fish food. However what's best for him would be to
find his own food".
After
maths, the teacher tells them a story. Today, it is the story of a
tortoise that desperately wanted to see the world. Two ducks took care of
the matter and flew the turtle around with a stick held in their beaks.
All the children would like to travel far like the turtle. Lionel too, and
suddenly everything becomes clear: his frog too was traveling with some
friends and when he saw Lionel's terrasse, he asked his friends to drop
him.
Everyday,
Lionel tries to make friend with his frog; he has bought fish food but
as soon as he sees Lionel, he leaps out of reach. Lionel heaves a heavy
sigh and leaves him alone. But he does not touch his food and his green
and shiny skin has now become grey and dull. What should he do?
On
Sunday,
Lionel and his parents go and spend the day by the lake of Salagou. This
is where they decide to release the frog. Without hesitating, he jumps
into the lake. He is gone... No, here he is, on the other side of the
lake. And as if to
sing a song of farewell, or to thank them, he starts to croak his song!
